San Antonio's Comprehensive Care Center

Publication: MDNews - San Antonio

Cancer care close to home is now more advanced, available and comfortable with the opening of Texas Oncology–San Antonio’s new Comprehensive Care Center. The 40,000 square foot center is dedicated to giving cancer patients enhanced access to medical and surgical oncology services, leading-edge imaging and radiation treatment technology, and research and clinical trials. Designed to service more than 300 patients a day, it is the largest cancer care center in San Antonio.

“At Texas Oncology, we believe in personalized care that treats the whole patient, not just their cancer, and the new Comprehensive Care Center will help us achieve that,” said Dr. Manuel Santiago M.D., Texas Oncology–San Antonio Medical Center. “We are able to provide the best care possible to our patients, with leading edge treatment options, close their loved ones.”

The center will expand Texas Oncology-San Antonio’s research and clinical trial capabilities, allowing patients to be treated with FDA-approved treatments but in different combinations, as physicians seek new effective applications.

“Our commitment to research at this location provides patients with access to advanced research and clinical trials, right here in their own community. And, we’re able to treat the patient comprehensively by providing a continuum of services,” said Dr. Santiago. “We have several specialists in the center that are highly qualified in different areas of cancer care who are immediately available to address the treatment of each patient.”

With patient-centered care in mind, the center offers innovative medical oncology, hematology, surgical oncology, gynecologic oncology, radiation oncology, anticoagulation management, and other specialized care, with seven procedure rooms, eight lab work rooms, 52 chemotherapy chairs and more than 30 exam rooms. The center will also feature advanced radiation capabilities, including the Varian TrueBeamTM high-dose linear accelerator, which includes onboard CT and fluoroscopy imaging for highly precise treatments. Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) is among the precision therapies that will be provided.

The advanced cancer care technology is complemented by a full range of supportive services, including a pharmacy, onsite lab, mobile PET/CT and ultrasound imaging capabilities, and an outdoor healing garden.

“Our multifaceted approach includes the comprehensive support each patient needs, from expedited consultation to novel treatment options,” said Dr. Santiago. “We’re passionate about providing our patients with access to a full range of cancer services in a more supportive, comfortable environment.”

Located at 5206 Research Drive, Texas Oncology-San Antonio Cancer Center opened in June, and the previous location at 4411 Medical Drive. The center has a staff of 13 physicians, supporting teams of nurses, technicians, and administrators.  Across the San Antonio area, Texas Oncology’s 34 physicians treat approximately 30,000 patients per year at 16 locations in the San Antonio area, including seven in San Antonio, and sites in New Braunfels, Floresville, Hondo, Boerne, Kerrville, Fredericksburg, Pleasanton, Seguin, and Uvalde.
