She Marked the End of Chemo in the Best Way

Publication: USA Today

TYLER, Texas – Wendy Freden had boxing gloves on and a huge smile on her face. She was looking around at her doctors and nurses and hoping for the signal that it was time.

Wendy had gone through a double mastectomy and four rounds of chemotherapy since February when she got her cancer diagnosis, stage 1A multi-focal invasive breast cancer.

For Wendy, chemo meant “extreme fatigue, mouth sores, infections, bone pain, neuropathy, severe fingertip pain – felt like someone used a hammer on all my fingernails,” she tells Humankind.

It was tough but she powered through. One of her bosses sent her boxing gloves as a reminder that she could conquer anything.

At Texas Oncology in Tyler, Texas, the end of chemo is celebrated by ringing the bell on the wall.

Wendy had finished all four rounds. It was finally time to ring the bell.

“I knew I wanted to punch the bell, not just ring it!” Wendy says.
