Cancer Doesn’t Care Where You Live

Publication: Texas Monthly

There are reasons people live in big cities. Among them: convenient access to the best healthcare possible, But cancer doesn’t care if you live in a downtown high-rise or on a rural ranch road. That’s why robust, high-quality community-based cancer care is so important in Texas. A cancer diagnosis shouldn’t necessarily require late-night kitchen table conferences to plan trips to distant treatment facilities and doctor’s offices.

A group of physicians founded Texas Oncology 30 years ago with this in mind. Patients don’t have to choose between high-quality care and proximity to their families and vital support systems. Of course, Texas Oncology is in majr cities like Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and Houston, but the practice also includes cancer treatment centers in Amarillo, Beaumont, Cleburne and in smaller communities across the state – more than 175 locations in all.

Because challenging diseases require exceptional insights, our network is not a single institution, but the driving passion of more than 420 physicians collectively focused on treating cancer and blood disorders with leading-edge technology and innovative research. Community-based care can help mitigate te inherent disruption that comes with cancer treatment. Our patients and their families find comfort in familiar surroundings and routine. Or physicians know that without the stress of travel, patient outcomes can improve as well.

Comprehensive care from Texas Oncology includes leading-edge treatments, research options, compassionate care teams and a community of support. Most cancer treatment is administered on an outpatient basis, and a very large percentage is provided in community-based cancer treatment centers. We offer access to a full spectrum of advanced treatment – from the newest chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatment to the most technologically advanced radiation therapy as well as genetic testing and evaluation and genomic sequencing. Through Texas Oncology, patients are connected to sub-specialty care such as blood and marrow transplants; the Austin Brain Tumor Center, Texas Center for Proton Therapy, orthopaedic, gynecologic and pediatric oncologists, and a Myelodysplastic Syndrome Center of Excellence.

At any given time, more than 150 national clinical trials are available at Texas Oncology practices across the state. We’ve also played a role in nearly 60 FDA-approved cancer-fighting drugs, about one-third of all FDA-approved cancer therapies.

Each year, 50,000 new patients choose to fight cancer with Texas Oncology in their own communities. Our guiding missing has always been that our patients deserve access to the best cancer care and support available. Our experience indicates that patients do better when they’re able to sleep in their own beds, be treated in familiar surroundings and with friends and family nearby. Cancer care without compromise, close to needed support. That’s the difference that Texas Oncology offers.
