Texas Center for Proton Therapy Brings Hope to North Texas Cancer Patients

Publication: D Magazine

Texas Center for Proton Therapy is creating more hope for North Texas cancer patients. The 63,000-square-foot facility in Las Colinas opened in November 2015 and has quickly become a magnet for those seeking leading-edge treatments performed by a world-renowned staff in a setting to close home. With latest-generation proton therapy technology, doctors precisely target cancer cells while minimizing damage to healthy tissue.

Texas Center for Proton Therapy offers the most advanced proton therapy technology in the state and is the only facility in Texas equipped with pencil-beam scanning in all of its treatment rooms and on-board threedimensional imaging with Cone-Beam Computed Tomography in two treatment rooms.

These technologies treat cancer with proton beams as small as two millimeters wide. The extraordinary accuracy allows many patients to maintain quality of life during and after treatment. With more than 75 years of combined experience in proton therapy, the staff attends to each patient’s unique cancer type, location, and overall well-being.

“This center has made Dallas-Fort Worth a medical destination,” says Dr. Andrew Lee, medical director of Texas Center for Proton Therapy. “Now, cancer patients in the Metroplex don’t have to leave their homes, jobs, or school and the close support of family and friends to move for a six- to eight-week course of treatment. This ability to stay close to their support systems significantly changes the healthcare landscape.”

Proton therapy technology is especially useful for treating tumors in sensitive areas such as the brain, spine, and near the heart, as well as for treating cancer in children, whose developing bodies are even more vulnerable to long-term side effects of radiation.

An estimated 20 million cancer survivors expected during the next decade. “As oncologists, we want to be mindful of quality of life during and after treatment,” says Dr. Lee, “Proton therapy and patient-centered care help patients fight their cancer with fewer side effects.”

Dr. Lee, the first doctor to perform pencilbeam scanning treatment in North America, launched proton treatment at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston almost 10 years ago and is joined at the Irving center by some of the top talent in the field of proton therapy. At capacity, Texas Center for Proton Therapy will treat an estimated 100 patients per day.
