Meet Our Winners

The Texas Oncology nurses listed below have received The DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses. Texas Oncology is excited to honor the nurses who provide exemplary care to our patients every day. Congratulations to all DAISY Award winners!

The DAISY Foundation™ was established in 1999 by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of 33 from complications of an autoimmune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired them to create The DAISY Award® as a way to show gratitude to nurses for the incredible impact they make every day in the lives of patients and their families. The DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses has been adopted by healthcare facilities around the world to celebrate nurses for their extraordinary care and compassion.

Spring 2023

Amanda Vaughan, BSN RN

Amanda is always very helpful for regular routine office visits and for resolving emergencies.Throughout the past 2 years, Amanda was able to accelerate pre-op appointments for several emergency surgeries. She has been able to obtain Lovenox prescriptions with very clear bridging instructions, and several times she has also had to place emergency prescription orders for additional Lovenox post-surgery. Amanda is always patient and very pleasant to work with for routine visits and emergency additional lab work post-surgery to ensure I am therapeutic with my blood thinners and INR range.
Texas Oncology Patient

April Morales, MSN, RN, OCN

April was the nurse who gave me my chemo infusions. She is so compassionate and always made sure I was comfortable and had what I needed. I especially appreciated that she and I would talk about things besides cancer, and our short conversations took my mind off of the enormity of what was happening in that infusion room. I actually look forward to when I go back for my Zometa infusions, and I get to see her. April’s calm demeanor, compassion, and humanity made such a difference for me in my treatment.
Texas Oncology Patient

Brandi Shepherd, BSN, RN

There is not one situation that stands out with Brandi. EVERY time I am with her she is encouraging, knowledgeable and caring. I love that she is in all of my appointments and would miss her if she weren't there. She is willing to go above and beyond when I have questions or concerns. She makes me feel like I'm her most important patient even though I know she has many others. She has walked along side of me through surgery, chemo, recovery, and life post cancer. I am grateful for all that she has done for me and all of Dr. Divine's patients.
Texas Oncology Patient

Buffy Christian, RN, OCN

Whether it’s upon entry into the consult room, making a special trip to the infusion, or even over the phone and email; Ms. Buffy expresses compassion, encouragement, devotion, kindness, thoughtfulness and concern for me, my family and all of her patients. Ms. Buffy has been instrumental in my 5-year journey, and we all thank God daily for having her be a part of it.
Texas Oncology Patient

Claire Robertson, BSN, RN

She is always willing to help out wherever it’s needed. Even though she has moved up to management, she is still a nurse and does not hesitate to step in. She has a very caring heart for everyone, patients, and employees.
Texas Oncology Employee

Jan O’Rourke, RN

Jan is the epitome of what a great nurse should be. She has compassion, good listening skills, creativity, compassion, and patience. She is authentic in her care. Jan is soft spoken and puts our patients at ease when in the infusion suite. She sits down and greets patients at eye level when caring for them. She listens earnestly and eases the patients’ fears. She seeks out sprite or ginger ale from another nurse that has a stock of it when a patient is nauseated. She is one of my go to people in the infusion room because she rarely says "no, we don't have the space" if a patient needs IV Fluids. She puts the patient first while also assisting her colleagues. This is why I know Jan is perfect for this award. It's not just one or two incidents, it's her DAILY WALK!
Texas Oncology Employee

Jennifer Womack, BSN, RN, OCN

Jennifer is a compassionate nurse, always making sure her patients are comfortable and happy. She is not only helpful and compassionate to her patients but also to family members. I have so much respect for her work, and I have so much gratitude for the way she treated me and my mother. Thank you Jennifer for all you do!
Texas Oncology Patient

Katy Baur, BSN, RN

Katy demonstrates superb compassion. Having cancer and going through chemotherapy is a very frightening and unknown time for anyone to experience. With Katy, walking into clinic feels like walking into home. She makes coming to therapy so comfortable. Even though it is a full clinic, she is acutely attentive, considerate, and compassionate to each individual’s needs. She is ALWAYS pleasant and greets you with a smile. It takes a special kind of person to do the work she does, and I can't think of anyone who is more deserving of recognition. She truly stands up to and goes above her calling. I am so grateful to have her as my nurse!
Texas Oncology Patient

Krista Peralez, MSN, RN

Krista will step in on a regular basis to cover desk nurses when staffing is low. This alone shows she goes out of her way to ensure important jobs are being done and her staff can have the time off they request. However, through a period of "roughly" 4+ months, Krista put her own job aside during the 8-5 workday to function as a medical assistant, supply orderer and stocker, infusion room chemo checker, a full-blown infusion room supervisor, and vetted hopeful new staff while our infusion room was at an all-time low on staffing. She stayed late and worked weekends (I’m using past tense, but it’s possible she’s still working these hours) to complete her managerial tasks that still needed to get done- all while working salary and knowing she wouldn’t get monetarily compensated for any of the extra time and effort. Krista cleaned chairs, pulled patients back to the infusion room, got vitals, helped infusion nurses get ports accessed or de-accessed, STOCKED like crazy, changed out the chemo bins, and pretty much helped out wherever and whenever she was needed. Krista stepped in to help in the biggest way as a manager and showed her staff that we could rely on her to always assist us and to have a fun attitude through the difficult times. As a nurse myself, I can easily say that having a manager like Krista makes all the difference in my ability to do my job well and feel supported on a day-to-day basis. I know patients don’t always get to see Krista’s impact on them to nominate her for a DAISY, so I wanted to make sure she was fully recognized for the impact she’s had on both the patients AND the staff these past several months (and years).
Texas Oncology Employee

Maribel Fabila, RN

Maribel Fabila, or Nurse Fabulous as I call her, made my journey through chemotherapy bearable.  She always greeted me with a bright smile like I was a friend from way back. She answered my relentless questions and addressed my latest concerns in a manner that I felt was competent, forthright, and compassionate. She was there for every one of my chemo sessions and treated me with the highest quality of care. She made me feel confident in the treatment plan, positive, and uplifted even when I didn’t start in that frame of mind.  I simply cannot imagine having gone through this without her. Maribel truly is a fabulous nurse!
Texas Oncology Patient

Melissa Chaco-Macdonald, BSN, RN, CBCN

Melissa has been very kind and caring through my breast cancer treatment. Her kindness helped me to be optimistic and kept me calm, because she always responded to my emails and numerous questions quickly and efficiently.  After my mastectomy, she gave me a vest with pockets, so I could put all the drainage tubes in those pockets. It was made of cotton, so it was very good for my skin which was going through a bad rash due to all the medications from the 4 surgeries on my breasts. She also wrapped my breast area with a wide band and taught me how to do it. After my mastectomy, the hospital had left my IV in my hand, and as soon as I contacted Melissa, she told me to come in and she took care of it quickly and efficiently.  She also taught me how to drain the tubes attached to my chest.  She has always been available to help me, guide me, and answer my numerous questions. I couldn't have gone through all my surgeries without her. I really appreciate her and would like to show her that she is very important to Dr. Thomas's patients.

Texas Oncology Employee

Sarah Chapasko, BSN, RN

Sarah is an extraordinary nurse. It would take more space on the nomination form to list everything she does well. She follows up immediately and responds to inquiries effectively and with great understanding, care, and professionalism. I was impressed the first time I met with her, and she continued to distinguish herself throughout my treatment.
Texas Oncology Patient

Sharon Staley, RN, OCN

Sharon is very caring, attentive, professional, responsive and goes above and beyond to assist anytime. She is always available for questions and to answer concerns. She was able to get a letter to clear me for dental work I needed as a result of chemo, and also my FMLA paperwork and return to work letter as my employer requested. She always returns my calls in a timely manner and is very patient when answering all of my questions, working closely with Dr. Taboada seeking what is in my best interest and best for my overall care.
Texas Oncology Patient

Fall 2022

Becky Hall, RN, OCN

Where to start, there are so many wonderful scenarios about this nurse. She brings life not only to Dr. Nanna Sulai clinic, but to our center as well. Becky is 100% the definition of team player.  How much she cares for our patients is what I believe to be the true definition of what a nurse should be.  We have certainly experienced many changes in the last few years; however, she has made it so much easier for me and our coworkers with laughter and compassion. If you were to look up the word compassion, she fits the definition. She is able to understand what other people are going through and feeling their pain. She is mindful of other people's emotions, thoughts, and experiences, and takes action when she sees someone else is suffering. Becky has a high level of emotional intelligence, so she is able to understand and manage the emotions of others. These are the reasons I believe she deserves the Daisy Award Nomination.
Texas Oncology Employee

Location

Beth Lanier, BSN, RN

When it comes to kindness, compassion, and caring for others, Beth has us all beat. She is always willing to go above and beyond to help her patients and staff.  Specifically, I remember a day when she was caring for a new patient and the patient was very anxious about her treatment and what would happen. Since the covid outbreak guests are not allowed to come into the infusion room, so she was crying about not having her family next to her while going through her treatment. Beth took the time to hold her hand, comfort her, and reassure her she was going to be safe and get through her treatment. Beth filled in for her family when she needed someone to listen and support her. Beth was her hero for that day.
Texas Oncology Employee

Location

Bryana Davidson, BSN, RN

Bryana has formed a personal relationship with us. She not only is great at giving personal medical care but remembers details we share of our lives and our kids when we come to visit. She is friendly, courteous, and respectful.
Texas Oncology Patient

Desiree Contreras, RN

Desiree is always willing to help others. She doesn’t even ask who your doctor is, instead she asks, “how can I help you?”  She is always providing encouraging words to her patients and being compassionate towards their care. She has excellent bedside manners and is always attentive to others’ needs. She demonstrates a high quality of care by knowing what is going on with each patient and what is necessary for their care. Desiree is an example of what we strive for here at Texas Oncology every day. It’s an honor to work alongside Desiree.
Texas Oncology Employee

Gina Stinson, BSN, RN

I had to get a PET Scan for a suspicious looking mass, and the doctor office I was working with couldn't seem to get an appointment for me. I reached out to Gina, and within 2 hours I had an appointment for the following week for Scan, and an appointment with Dr. Hodges at Texas Oncology. She was involved with my care from the very beginning until after surgery to have mass removed. She called almost daily to check up on me, and to make sure I understood everything that was going on and with the testing. She prayed with and for me, and I truly felt like she was an angel sent from God to help me through this. Cancer is such a scary word and having Nurse Gina there to walk through this with me made it bearable.
Texas Oncology Patient

Jaclyn Caraffa, BSN, RN, CPN, OCN

I have worked alongside Jaci for over 5 years. I have never met a nurse that was such a fierce advocate for her patients. She always puts patient care above everything else. She listens to her patients and provides them with the best care. She has even treated my mother for 6 cycles of chemo and the excellent care she provided my mother is the standard of care. Her compassion for others is evident not only in her role as an infusion nurse but in all aspects of her life. We are very lucky to have her on our Frisco team.
Texas Oncology Employee

Katy Kinnard, LVN

Katy has been a total professional consistently providing top quality genuine care over many years. Her excellent communication and follow-up skills have provided immediate answers to clinical questions. She is always kind to other patients and team members.  She truly cares.
Texas Oncology Employee

Linda Valdez, RN

In the cancer environment that lends itself to plenty of uncertainty, it has been a godsend to have Linda as my nurse. Linda puts herself on the front lines daily to assist all of her patients. She has the highest integrity as a nurse that I have seen. She helps all the patients to feel safe, comfortable, and happy.  She gives hope to all of her patients and is so compassionate about anything that they are experiencing. Linda is proof that laughter is the best medicine.  She helps my husband, and she is so gentle and inspiring. Kent is able to smile when he is here, and she makes him feel at home. She has helped him through some very difficult times and has never let him feel uncomfortable. There is no room for sadness with such a wonderful nurse and person. Linda is what Kent remembers most about his treatments and always has sweet things to say about the care she has provided. Linda provides great care to her patients and always has a cheerful attitude. She takes care of each patient as if they are the only one in the room.
Texas Oncology Patient

Manasa Khan, BSN, RN

Manasa has been there to help me for almost a year now. During chemo, I was feeling unwell and she listened to my symptoms and determined that I needed to come in because I was badly dehydrated. With such a busy schedule in the chemo room, she was able to call me back promptly and get me in for a hydration treatment. This may not seem like much, but in a world where situations like this are more likely to be met with a no, she was able to get me in, so I could get treated.  It turned out that this was the beginning of a long journey in which I could turn to Manasa for help and she has always responded. I am not the only one as I have observed her putting her patients first throughout this cancer treatment journey. She is extremely knowledgeable about her field and will research an issue you are experiencing if she thinks there may be something better. Manasa does not let patients down, nor does she ever make you feel like you are being a bother...she is an extraordinary lady!
Texas Oncology Patient

Mary Gogins, BSN, RN

Mary is a new nurse to our center and to Oncology in general . I have watched as Mary has jumped into her new position as a Radiation Oncology nurse and shown the true example of care and compassion to our patients . I hear her greet them by name and take a genuine interest in their wellbeing to comfort them and give them the care they need.  Mary can usually be found with a smile on her face and willing to help everyone in our department from patients to staff , all while still training and learning her new position. Some days are extremely busy with late lunches and late evenings but one thing that is consistent is Mary’s great attitude and care.
Texas Oncology Employee

Patricia Alderete, RN

I have dealt with stage four Cancer  for 12 years at the El Paso Cancer Center.  I was determined to stop treatment as I got tired of this way of life and the treatments.  However, when I met my  nurse Patty, the way she treated me, her attention to details, her professionalism, and her great heart, made me change my feelings to continue with the treatments. Patty goes above and beyond the call of duty. On one occasion, I got my infusion on Nurse Patty’s day off , and when she became aware that I had my infusion on her day off , she made sure I was always scheduled when she would be there.  She wanted to be there to provide me with support and make sure my infusion went well.  I thank the Lord we still have individuals like her, and the clinic should feel proud to have an individual like Patty working for them.
Texas Oncology Patient

Rachel Burgess, BSN, RN

Rachel has always made me feel special. I know she must treat her other patients the same way, which is why she’s such an outstanding nurse. She always has such a positive attitude and smiles (even though she has a mask on, I can still tell). She makes my time there more bearable. She asks about my family, and I can tell she truly cares. She’s a bright spot in my day. She deserves all the awards she can get. I will miss her in my life when my treatment is over.
Texas Oncology Patient

Shelby Nichols, BSN, RN

Shelby is always so kind and considerate of any and all of my needs.  I’ve been a patient here for just over 3 years.  She helps make my visits fun instead of something spooky or dreadful.  No matter what is going on or how many clients are being helped, she is always pleasant.  I appreciate her sense of humor and kindness more than I can explain.  I’m grateful for her work here.
Texas Oncology Patient

Stephanie Ammons, BSN, RN, OCN

From day 1, Stephanie has made my mom feel she was heard, special, the only one in the room, cared for, and that no matter what she and the staff would be there for Mom anytime any day! Stephanie encouraged Mom with each step through Dr visits and her chemotherapy, and even checking on her in the infusion room when Mom had a little scare. Stephanie was right there putting Mom first and making her feel comfortable. Stephanie has ALWAYS respected Moms questions and called her back and walked her through each explanation. She has done a great job explaining things to Mom and giving Mom examples and resources. Stephanie always takes her time and provides Mom with answers that help educate her with each issue! My family and I couldn’t be more grateful to Dr Kilgore and Stephanie for literally walking beside us each week! We pray for Stephanie and the staff each week and thank God for gifting us with such an incredible nurse!

Stephanie goes above and beyond to make sure the patients have excellent care. She is always smiling and makes patients feel comfortable before, during and after their treatment.
Texas Oncology Employee

Spring 2022

Alisha Danbom, BSN, RN

Alisha has been a great nurse to me. When I first started with Texas Oncology she was one of my first nurses. She has the best bedside manner of any at this facility. I wish Texas Oncology had more nurses like her. Not to say the others are bad at their jobs, Alisha just excels. Even when I am not her patient she always knows my name and ask how I am doing. There are plenty more ways to say how great she is, however this is the best I can say at this time.
Texas Oncology Patient

Ann Herrera, RN, OCN

My journey started 10 years ago as a breast cancer patient of Dr. Kalla’s. I had many questions over that time and Ann was wonderful in her knowledge, friendliness, and speed in getting back to me with answers. Now, I get to work with Ann as a colleague. She still impresses me every day. As our new nurse manager, Ann has stepped into a challenging role and exceeds expectations every time!
Texas Oncology Employee

Barbara Chen, BSN, RN, OCN

“Although I am not a patient, I work with Barbara and find inspiration and respect in her dedication to patient care. She is a recent cancer survivor, one that does not let cancer be bigger than her role as a caregiver to others dealing with this challenge and life journey of cancer. She has missed very little work as she moved through all phases of her journey including diagnosis and treatment. She has never complained about her assignments and was here for her patients. I imagine they see her strength when they have office visits and wonder if she can do this, so can I. I have been in oncology for many years and Barbara's strength and dedication to others is the framework of most oncology healthcare providers. Adding a real-life event of personal cancer to an oncology nurse that does not stop her passion for caring for others is the framework of this nurse, Barbara Chen. Thank you for making the lives of others better. I admire your strength and courage.”
Texas Oncology Employee

Dawn Denton, BSN, RN, OCN

Dawn is my lovely colleague. I transferred to TXO Mansfield from TXO Bedford at the beginning of this year. Dawn had begun her TXO career at Bedford as well. Although I was nervous about transferring here and being the new kid again, I was excited to meet Dawn because she has quite a fan club in the Mid-Cities market. I am a new nurse and nurses like Dawn are the type of nurse I aspire to be. She is brilliant, knowledgeable, warm, honest, funny, and genuine. She runs Dr. Waghela's incredibly busy clinic but any question I ever have does not go unanswered. She is always here for me, all our colleagues, and our patients. She is a force of a nurse and an incredible human being. She is deeply deserving of this accolade and recognition. Thank you, Dawn, for continuing to inspire me and all of those around you to be better versions of ourselves. I respect and appreciate you more than I could ever express in words.
Texas Oncology Employee

Donna Smith, BSN, RN

My cancer journey would have been so difficult without her. She demonstrates care, compassion, and kindness. She handled every need with compassion and priority. Not only is she an excellent nurse but she has become a dear friend. Donna's love for her job and patients shows in how she treats her patients. She is so deserving of this award. She will never know just how much I appreciate her.
Texas Oncology Patient

Elizabeth Wade, BSN, RN

The perfect example of an all-around amazing nurse. Always demonstrates integrity, accountability, compassion, respect, and teamwork. She is what holds the GynOnc team together. She goes above and beyond to make sure the patients have excellent care. She is patient and respects the patients and providers time and helps correlate care.
Texas Oncology Employee

Elsa Bryant, BSN, RN, OCN

Elsa is a cheerleader! When things get rough, she will tell you to hang in there. What I appreciate the most about Elsa is she is willing to listen to you about what is going on in your everyday life and she remembers. She will ask on the next visit, how are your grandkids or did you enjoy your trip? How she does this with all of the patients she sees and the time between visits, I do not know, but it makes me feel like a person and not a number. A BIG Thanks to Her ! She is Amazing!
Texas Oncology Patient

Erin Jacobs, BSN, RN, OCN

I ran out of my meds a day early and I went into the doctor’s office all panicky and crying and Erin came out and talked to me. I can’t remember what she told me, but I do remember feeling like she cared about how I was feeling. She has always been genuine and that’s not a quality easily found.
Texas Oncology Patient

Jamie Yanez, BSN, RN

I’d had a very upsetting appointment with my oncologist and began sobbing when I got back to infusion. Within five seconds Jamie saw that I was crying and rushed over to me. She stayed right by my side and talked to me through it and had me laughing within 10 minutes! She always had a way of bringing me out of my funk when chemo got to be too much. Many days would have been unbearable had she not been there. She’s just awesome and deserves all the recognition you can give her!
Texas Oncology Patient

Janette Payne, BSN, RN

She has held this nursing department together through all the changes and short staffing. She comes in an hour early every day to make sure everything gets done. She is so knowledgeable about our patients and their situations. She has the respect and trust of everyone in this clinic. Our clinic would not run if not for her.
Texas Oncology Employee

Jennifer Womack, BSN, RN

Jennifer has been by my side from my first Chemo to my last immunotherapy. With each new chemo drug, she was a steady, compassionate presence that calmed me. She provided quality patient care while still not having me feel just like a number. I especially like how she explained the symptoms that might arise and managed my expectations.
Texas Oncology Patient

Juanita Marrero, BSN, RN

Juanita goes above and beyond daily to help her fellow nurses. She comes to work early and puts the needs of others before her own. I can truly say she is loved by her patients and her co-workers. Her philosophy is one I admire in that she will never turn someone away when they need guidance or assistance. That is something I strive to instill in all the nurses I work with, and she exemplifies that. I am so proud to have her as a coworker and part of an amazing nursing team.
Texas Oncology Employee

Lydia Jordan, RN, OCN

The award's origin describes our Lydia. Lydia shows love in everything she does. Her energy motivates & inspires me. She acts as if she is never too busy to help others. I watch her go all day and never stop. The reality is she is super-busy. She makes holidays and birthdays special. She creates morale boosters to brighten our day. She values people. She brings joy & love to work & shares them generously. She sets an example for me to aspire to.
Texas Oncology Employee

Lynn Walker, RN

I don’t have a specific story to tell but wanted to recognize Lynn for her love and compassion for people. Lynn always goes above and beyond for our patients and staff. Lynn is an outstanding nurse, very knowledgeable and willing to work many hours to make sure our patients are taken care of. If I ever got ill, she would be my top choice nurse that I would want taking care of me. I feel very blessed that I get to witness the love and care Lynn shows our patients.
Texas Oncology Employee

Melanie Kirksey, BSN, RN, OCN

Melanie is absolutely vital to our day-to-day operations. She is the most thoughtful caring and kindhearted nurse. She goes above and beyond with every single patient and brings decades of oncology knowledge to the table. She is a role model and leader for the rest of our nursing staff and consistently the bright ray of sunshine in an otherwise cloudy day.
Texas Oncology Employee

Rene Woolard, RN, OCN

I have worked with Rene in the infusion room. She has a very calming presence. She makes the patients feel very comfortable and cared for. During reactions, she maintains her calm attitude and focuses on assisting the patient physically and mentally. She is a treat to observe. Even being in the chemotherapy room with her makes everyone feel comfortable.
Texas Oncology Employee

Sarah Chapasko, BSN, RN

Sarah consistently goes above and beyond to care for patients. She is kind and caring and meticulously ensures that every detail of the patient's care is straightened out. She always gives a personal touch to let the patients know she really cares.
Texas Oncology Employee

Savannah Garcia, BSN, RN

A patient came in for a port flush, forgot lidocaine, and was TERRIFIED of a needle in her chest. Eventually, we calmed her down and Savannah offered her hand to squeeze. I flushed her port without her even noticing. Aside from excellent chair-side care, Savannah is more than deserving of a DAISY Award. She advocates, not only for patients, but her peers as well. She is well-respected amongst coworkers in every department around our clinic. I am very proud to work alongside her every day.
Texas Oncology Employee

Stephanie Garcia, RN

Stephanie has gone above and beyond to make me feel comfortable at every treatment. She shows how much she cares for everyone that's here. She makes sure we understand exactly what they are doing. She is a caring nurse!
Texas Oncology Patient

Sue Galloway, RN

Always smiling and the most hardworking nurse. She sincerely cares for patients and has for the past 15 years. We’ve had many staff shortages for months and she has put in a lot of effort without a grimace. Sue stays back almost every evening to catch up and puts in many more hours than required . Amazing person who inspires all of us to be our best, encourages coworkers and is always ready to help.
Texas Oncology Employee

Whitney Dombroski, BSN, RN

Whitney was a huge help when my husband first found out he had cancer. She went above and beyond helping us coordinate with his oncologist, scans, and surgeon. As you know, having cancer can be scary, but Whitney was our rock. Whitney is the most caring nurse (person) I know. She would be a role model for the Daisy award.
