Dr. Gury Doshi, a medical oncologist with Texas Oncology–Houston Memorial City, said that Texas Oncology’s community-based focus enhances the service level provided to each patient.

Since 1993, Texas Oncology sites in the Houston market have contributed to more than 230 clinical trials, including one completed last year exploring a new treatment for prostate cancer. Participant Jon Nicholson enrolled in the trial in 2014 after fighting prostate cancer for 10 years.
“I had never considered doing a clinical trial,” said Nicholson. “But when I sat down with Dr. Doshi, she explained everything to me in such great detail that I had no concerns leaving the conversation. Any fears were turned into high hopes.”
Nicholson noted that he also enrolled to help advance prostate cancer research and potentially save lives. During the clinical trial, Nicholson took an oral drug for two years and visited with Dr. Doshi every four months. The appointments included blood tests, full body scans, a comprehensive questionnaire to monitor side effects, and a one-on-one discussion with Dr. Doshi.
“Dr. Doshi was phenomenal every time we met,” Nicholson said. “She is incredibly encouraging, positive, and patient. She walked through every question I had to make sure I felt comfortable and confident moving forward. The whole trial was handled beautifully.”
Nicholson responded positively to the trial, and his prostate cancer has been in remission for four years. He has become an advocate for clinical trials and encourages others to participate.
“I had an amazing experience,” said Nicholson. “I responded well to the drug, and I helped others who may face prostate cancer in the future. How can you argue with that?”
For Dr. Doshi, it’s patients like Nicholson who motivate her day-to-day work. She said seeing patients thrive during a trial is what it’s all about.
“On a very personal level, research is what fuels me,” said Dr. Doshi. “As a researcher, I know my strength is not as a basic scientist in the lab developing the cure. But I am passionate about clinical research – taking a new drug and bringing it to my patients in clinic. Walking patients through this journey, providing them a treatment opportunity they would not otherwise have, ensuring they feel comfortable, and supporting them throughout the process is immensely satisfying.”
This year alone, Texas Oncology sites in the Houston market will participate in more than 40 clinical trials, focusing primarily on bladder, kidney, and breast cancers. Dr. Doshi said immunotherapy will continue to be a strong focus for their research, ultimately seeking a cure.
