Texas Oncology-McKinney Offers Radiation Treatment

Publication: McKinney Courier-Gazette, McKinney

Texas Oncology–McKinney last week announced the addition of radiation oncology to its existing suite of cancer treatment options, including medical oncology and hematology, beginning June 5.

The offering of radiation therapy is part of Texas Oncology’s long-term commitment to bring comprehensive, quality care to patients across Texas in their own communities, near the critical support of family and friends.

“Our community-based approach to cancer care provides our patients with a full range of advanced cancer treatment options,” said Dr. Anand Shivnani, a radiation oncologist at Texas Oncology-McKinney in a release. “The addition of radiation therapy not only offers our patients the convenience of having their medical team under one roof, but also the comfort of staying close to home, work, and important support networks throughout treatment.”

Radiation oncologists Dr. Jill Heffernan and Shivnani will provide radiation therapy treatment, which, initially, will feature external beam radiation including intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). This advanced form of radiation therapy uses image-guided technology to precisely target tumor cells in sensitive or hard-to-reach areas, such as prostate cancer or head and neck cancers, while reducing side effects.

Later this summer, the practice will begin offering stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), which is typically used to treat cancers where surgery may not be an option, such as brain cancer or certain lung cancers.

The Texas Oncology–McKinney medical team also plans to offer radiation therapy clinical trials in an effort to identify new and more effective cancer treatments. The practice anticipates clinical trials to be available beginning next year.

Texas Oncology–McKinney is at 5236 W. University Dr., Suite 1000, McKinney (in the Baylor Medical Center at McKinney building at the northwest corner of U.S. Highway 380 and Lake Forest Drive). The office can be reached at 972-542-8609.
