Supporting Waco Cancer Patients One Step at a Time

Cancer research is all about moving forward one step at a time. The dedicated staff at Texas Oncology–Waco is taking that in stride, literally, by participating in a number of fundraising walks and runs in their community. They’ve rallied as a team to participate in both the annual American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure.

“Everyone at the practice truly enjoys teaming up for these relays and helping raise funds for cancer research,” said Dr. Thomas Harris, medical oncologist at Texas Oncology–Waco. “Seeing our patients’ smiling faces at each race is so heartwarming. We’re all in it together to find a cure for cancer.”

The practice employees also lace up their running shoes for the “Livestrong at the YMCA” race, which raises funds to support the free exercise program that the YMCA of Central Texas offers to cancer survivors. The program purpose is to restore spirit, mind, and body, supporting cancer survivors emotionally and physically as they work toward healing.

“Fundraising for cancer research is hugely important to us,” said Karen Knustrom, practice administrator at Texas Oncology–Waco. “It’s not just about treating the patients we have now – it’s about helping researchers, including our own physicians and nurses, find better treatments for cancer. Participating in these relays helps us do just that.”

These annual fundraisers are just a few of the many ways the Waco practice puts patients first as they work toward finding more effective treatments for cancer.
