What to Know Before You Cancel Your Mammogram

Publication: Austin Monthly

Between family, work, and personal commitments our calendars can get filled up quickly and we might be inclined to push our personal health appointments off our to-do list. However, mammograms remain the single most important tool for prevention and early detection of breast cancer. That’s why it’s important that women prioritize their health.

Consider the following information and don’t cancel your mammogram.

  • Breast cancer is the second-deadliest cancer among American women. Other than adopting a healthier lifestyle, early detection with regular mammograms remains the single most effective way for combating the disease.

  • Breast cancer cannot be completely prevented, but women can take steps to decrease risk and/or improve early detection of the disease. It is important to discuss with a physician your individual risk factors, including age, menopausal status, and family history to determine your screening needs.

  • The American Cancer Society reports that mammograms can detect changes in a woman’s breast that could indicate cancer years before physical symptoms develop.

  • Women with a first-degree relative who had breast cancer before age 50 are considered higher risk of developing breast cancer. Genetic testing can help determine if a woman has a genetic disorder that may increase risk of breast cancer, like the BRCA gene.

  • Lifestyle factors can increase the risk of developing breast cancer. Regular exercise, limiting alcohol intake, and maintaining a healthy body weight may reduce the risk of breast cancer.

To prevent breast cancer, early detection remains a primary focus. For more information on resources and recommendations on screenings and early detection, visit TexasBreastSpecialists.com.
