It’s not unusual for cancer patients to find themselves bombarded with well-meaning “expert” advice about their diagnosis. A common recommendation is that “bigger is better,” meaning that an academic medical center is the only place to get treated. The fact is most cancer treatment is administered on an outpatient basis, and a very large percentage is provided in community-based cancer treatment centers in small towns as well as major cities.
