General Summary:
Dr. Holmes is board certified in internal medicine and also medical oncology. My professional career has involved the treatment and research for the cure of breast cancer. At MD Anderson, I completed my cancer training and joined the Faculty of Breast Medical Oncology. At MD Anderson, I performed the first clinical trial of paclitaxel (Taxol) resulting in approval for breast cancer. After 15 years at MD Anderson, I joined Texas Oncology/US Oncology and the Breast Cancer Research Committee. I was the principal investigator for the clinical trial that led to the approval of pegfilgrastim (Neulasta) for prevention of low white blood cells from chemotherapy. I have continued as an active member of the Breast Cancer Research Committee with US Oncology.
Additionally, I am very involved in Supportive Care issues and lecture regularly on nausea, vomiting, myelosuppression. I am a Program Director for the School of Breast Oncology, an national annual comprehensive course updating physicians on breast cancer as well as The Future of Breast Cancer, a national breast cancer meeting aimed at disseminating information about new treatments and technologies for breast cancer. At Memorial City Hospital, once a month I coordinate and prepare a multidisplinary discussions about difficult, challenging, or new aspects of breast cancer. This requires close coordination with Radiology, Radiation Oncology, Pathology, and Surgery and its subspecialties.
