Dr. Chawla received a B.A. in Chemistry from Washington University in St. Louis in 2001. She received her medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas in 2005. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas in 2008. After residency, she began her Hematology/Oncology Fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis which she completed in 2011.

Dr. Chawla was Chief Hematology/Oncology Fellow at Washington University in St. Louis from 2010-2011. As a fellow, she served on the Fellowship Education Committee from 2008-2011. She received the VA Award for Outstanding Patient Service while a resident at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. She is a membor of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology.
As a nearly-native Texan, Dr. Chawla is a classical violinist and an avid runner. She has run two marathons through the Leukemia Society's Team in Training.
