  • The Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at Sammons was founded in August, 1982. The program was among the first in the United States to establish clinical transplantation using unrelated stem cell donors in 1986.
  • More than 3000 blood and marrow transplants have been performed at Sammons Cancer Center including autologous, allogeneic-related and allogeneic-unrelated donors ranking amongst the largest centers in the nation.
  • In addition to a transplant center, the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at Sammons is one of few centers in the nation that serves in donor recruitment and stem cell procurement for the National Blood and Marrow Donor Program (NMDP).
  • The Foundation for the Accreditation of Cell Therapy (FACT) was created with the assistance of the Sammons Blood and Marrow Transplant Program. Accreditation by FACT is important for transplant centers in the United States. FACT mandates excellence in patient care, teaching and research.
  • Sammons transplant physicians participate in numerous national clinical trials sponsored by the National Institute of Health and pivotal studies in new drug development.
  • Assistance in accessing financial and psychological support resources is offered by the transplant program social work team. Social workers are available to provide support in obtaining financial aid for medications, housing or other basic necessities as well as crisis intervention/family or patient concerns.
